Credit education

Practical, plain-language answers to the questions people ask most about their credit reports.

What is on a credit report?

Personal details, accounts and their payment history, balances, public records and inquiries. Each bureau may report slightly differently, so review all three.

What can be disputed?

Information you believe is inaccurate, incomplete, obsolete or unverifiable. Accurate negative information generally stays for the period the law allows.

How long do disputes take?

Bureaus generally must investigate within 30 days after receiving your dispute, sometimes 45, and send results within five business days of finishing.

How does utilization work?

Utilization compares your revolving balances to your limits. Try the free simulator to see how paying down balances changes it — it shows utilization only, not a score prediction.

Habits that protect your progress

Pay on time, avoid unnecessary new applications, and keep copies of every letter and response.
